HISTORY OF THE STONE SHOP
Felix Meier began his trade as a stone mason in Bavaria, Germany back in 1860.
In 1864 Felix came to the United States and worked throughout the Detroit area building numerous stone railroad bridges.
Felix then went to work in Chicago for several years after the “Great Chicago Fires of 1871”.
After completing numerous restoration projects in Chicago, Felix returned to Detroit in 1875 continuing in his trade as a stone mason and in 1885 he started his first cut stone contracting business.
Felix was involved with many Detroit landmarks including the
Hurlbut Memorial at the entrance to Waterworks Park in 1895.
Today, Felix’s great-grandchildren, Ken and Gary Vermander carry on the 5th generation family stone business as the owners of The Stone Shop, Inc.
